We are planning to launch the "Feed a Brain Summit" at the same time as the "How to Feed a Brain" Book by Cavin Balaster.
Who Are We?
Cavin Balaster:
-Cavin Balaster
Author of How to Feed a Brain, creator of FeedaBrain.com and AdventuresinBrainInjury.com, and co-host of the Adventures in Brain Injury Podcast.
My name is Cavin Balaster. I am the author of How to Feed a Brain: Nutrition for Optimal Brain Function and Repair. I am also a speaker, coach, educator, and a survivor of a severe traumatic brain injury.
In 2011, I survived a two-story fall, was comatose for twelve days, diagnosed with a diffuse axonal injury (DAI) and was given less than a 10% chance of recovery. After finally waking from a 12-day coma, serious complications arose with the need to induce a second coma. In the following months, I endured severe brain fog, memory loss, breathing problems, in coordination with the left side of my body (my left hand was completely flexed inward), and...
I didn't eat, walk, or talk for months.
At a pivotal moment, I was introduced to functional medicine and functional neurology, which illuminated for me a different way of looking at recovery. As several treatments, exercises, and therapies were implemented...
I began to reclaim the mental clarity I had before my injury.
I utilized this regained clarity and dove into study, contacting practitioners of many different specialties to better understand how I could optimize my own recovery.
I now drive, ride bikes, camp, play guitar, sing, and even practice martial arts!
After my injury, I did not know if I'd ever recover enough to lead a successful life, but I vowed that if I did get better, I would work to share the most effective tools that I found throughout recovery, and that is what my websites are all about: Improving a Billion Brains… Improving a Billion Lives!
I have been working with doctors, nutritionists, professors, functional neurologists, and dieticians, to put together resources to help and guide others.

He is a leading practitioner who works with patients from all over Minnesota as well as the USA.

Dr. Schmoe is board certified through the American Chiropractic Neurology Board and has completed a TBI Certification.

He is an expert in Functional Neurology and Functional Medicine.
Jeremy’s introduction to Functional Neurology came as a patient and practitioner after having undergone multiple surgeries and years of failed rehabilitation attempts, he finally achieved relief from a persistent shoulder condition that ended his baseball career. Jeremy brings a wealth of neuro-rehabilitation experience, particularly in the areas of vestibular and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation (including concussion),
as he personally has had injuries from whiplash skiing accidents that lead to debilitating vertigo and dizziness from 2011-2014.
He is a fellow in Brain Injury Rehabilitation who helps manage patients with complex neuro and metabolic conditions.

In December 2015, he was named Valedictorian for the Carrick Institute/ISCN Traumatic Brain Injury Graduation! He was chosen for having the highest score on the Fellow of the American Board of Brain Injury and Rehabilitation (FABBIR) exam during the year.

Dr. Schmoe is also a speaker for the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies, where he shares his expertise and presents advice on managing patients with concussion and brain injury. In this role, he teaches and educates other practitioners about clinical applications in functional neurology. He has lectured for the Minnesota Chiropractic Association, Northwestern Health Science University, University of Minnesota Sports Performance Program and various patient support groups. He has worked with multiple professional athletes with complex injuries and persistent post-concussive symptoms and he is on the leadership team for Functional Neuro-Orthopedics (FNOR).

He is a highly innovative rehabilitation specialist that draws from a diverse wealth of clinical experience gained from years of clinical experience in the areas of sports and neurorehabilitation.
-Michelle Malmberg
Certified GAPS Practitioner and Co-Host of the
Adventures in Brain Injury Podcast
Michelle Malmberg
Michelle is a former ballroom and Latin dancer, choreographer, a mother, and all-around lovely human being who
was given a 1% chance of survival after numerous seizures resulted in...
  • A coma with a rock bottom GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale of 3);
  • Imaging showing that she had a mandarin orange size tumor in her right frontal lobe
  • A medical mishap resulted in a punctured carotid artery that bled out into her chest cavity requiring emergency thoracic surgery and a blood transfusion.
Once stabilized, the tumor was surgically removed and she worked toward a successful outcome and a remarkable recovery!
Michelle then acquired two untreated Strep infections which lead to Adult-onset PANDAS - a form of Autoimmune Encephalitis.
Unable to get medical assistance due to a lack of knowledge of such a rare condition, Michelle researched and identified her case independently. Two years later, testing via Moleculera Labs and diagnosis from a PANDAS specialist confirmed her research. Today she is a student of functional medicine and nutrition, fellow adventurer, and co-host of the Adventures in Brain Injury Podcast.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that more than 1.7 million brain injuries are sustained each year. Of those injuries, it is estimated that 43% of those who suffer TBI will develop a long-term disability as a result.
  • Neurodegenerative diseases are also a large problem. The CDC reports that in 2010, about 42% of individuals living in residential care communities had Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. Additionally, most of these patients are being fed processed formulas, which contribute to declining brain health.
  • There are many ways to support the brain after injury and disease, and it is time that these tools are shared with the world!
