What makes Huperzine A special, is that it inhibits an enzyme called Acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down Acetylcholine. By inhibiting this enzyme, Acetylcholine levels will increase, however, many Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors inhibit various forms of this enzyme which cause an elevation of Acetylcholine levels in undesired regions of the brain and body. Huperzine A, in contrast, only inhibits the G4 isoform of Acetylcholinesterase, which selectively raises Acetylcholine levels in areas of the brain that play key roles in memory, learning and mood. Another interesting thing about Huperzine A, is that via inhibiting the G4 Isoform of Acetylcholineesterase, it causes increased activation of Alpha 7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine receptors, which regulate, for a large part, inflammatory pathways in the brain. By causing increased activation of this receptor, Huperzine A supports balanced inflammation levels, which may protect the brain from damage, as a lot of damage in the brain is caused by uncontrolled inflammation. This can also have major effects on both mood and cognition.
